Assignment 1-Final

Twisted Waist

Inspired by the Canton Tower and was obsessed with the twisted loft form. An organic form with controlled pattern is what I’m looking for. However the pattern is somehow too rigid at some point so I changed the form to achieve some of the looseness.

When we discuss the norm “Vessel”, it is important to think about what scale level it could be. For the final concept I want to compare the architecture scale and the furniture scale.

With my pine cone

Concept&Description

I decided to make a vessel for a pine cone I have.

The repetition of geometry is the crucial characteristic of the pine cone in terms of form. The form is derived from the first assignment which mimic the pine cone. The final prototype abandoned some of those similarity and represent it in a more abstract way. The pine cone is supposed to sit on top of vessel.

Project 1 – Ripple & Lipper

Design Description

This vessel is inspired by the shape of water ripples and splashes. The rich form of this vessel has multiple functions, which can be used as a flower arrangement and a fruit tray. It consists of two parts, the low flat bottom can be used for fruit placement, and the slender tubular structure in the middle can be used as a flower arrangement vase. This container will be made of silver metal, and the reflected luster is like sunlight refracted by water waves.

The Softness

Yang Pei / Yushi Zhao

Design Concept:

The concept of the vessel is the softness of fabric. Its twisted and distorted form is inspired from crumpled fabric and gives a feeling of softness although it is made from bronze.  

The hollow-cut shape is designed for inserting pens. The double layers can reinforce the support of those “standing” pens. The shapes of the two layers are slightly different, and different overlapping effects can be seen at different angles.

Design Goals:

Design a beautiful pen holder that can classify pens.

Netting Geometry

The vessel is using the technique of interwoven netting to create the a hanging light fixture. The gap in between the the netting structure gives the interior view of the lantern which is also as rich as the exterior. Other than that, it also brings out consistent geometric shadow which will also transform the environment of the space.

The shape of the lantern is based on the red Chinese lantern but the middle part is flatten instead of having a full sphere shape. The lantern is design specifically to have holes and gaps so that the light source from the inside can travel outside. The gaps cannot be too big or to small so that the shadow produced is complex enough but not too much. The shadow also looks like the common motif for Islamic geometry.

Assignment 4 – Hidden Wave

Concept

The bottom of the vessel forms a topography that can’t be seen from the exterior, like a wave hidden in the vessel, brewing for another change in the this micro climate. If seeing from outside, the interior situation will not be perceived.

The goal of this vessel is to mimic a micro climate of the ocean. Either be a coming storm or serenity of the surface.
